Watson resigns Scotland captaincy

Scotland bosses are on the hunt for a new skipper after Saltires cricket captain Ryan Watson last night stood down from the position.

The 32-year-old, who led Scotland at the 2007 World Cup, looked a condemned man last Sunday as the Saltires slumped to a 162-run Friends Provident Trophy loss, with Watson contributing just one run from six balls.

Scotland's failure to qualify for the 2011 World Cup, coupled with some disastrous personal form in qualifying, he scored just 72 runs from ten innings in South Africa, meant the pressure had become too much for Watson.

"It really has been a very tough decision, the hardest I've had to make but I think it is the right one," said Watson.

"It's a massive honour to captain your country and I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

"I was lucky enough to captain Scotland against South Africa at the World Cup and that will always be a special memory

"But I think I have taken things as far as I can and, although I hate to go out on a bad note, recently it's clear that I have failed to inspire the troops or myself.

"There was no pressure put on me to stand down, it's a personal decision."
