Colin Smith slams 'horrendous' performance from Scots against Canada
Scotland's Colin Smith has described his side's performance in their 148-run loss to Canada in Benoni on Wednesday as "horrendous".
The veteran wicketkeeper was dismayed after his team were bowled out for a paltry 104 in pursuit of 253, which was built around Ashish Bagai's 87, at Willowmoore Park in their final Group A match of World Cup qualifying. Umar Bhatti ripped through the top order claiming three wickets and the Scots never recovered, with Smith (43) the last man out as their innings was all over in 30.5 overs.
"We were outplayed to be fair," he said. "But we were the architects of our own downfall. We bowled poorly, too many extras, dropped too many catches."
He added: "I can't explain the way we batted. I'm astonished to be honest. I'm obviously very disappointed at the moment and I cannot be giving any answers to the way we've played.
"The total was very achievable on that wicket and outfield. If you could just build a partnership with two guys getting in and start to rotate the strike, but we just lost wickets - it was horrendous.
"They did not bowl deliveries to take wickets. We've played some terrible shots and they've caught them. It's as simple as that. It was poor shot selection."
Both sides were already through to the Super Eight stage of the tournament, but Scotland's second defeat of the competition means they will head into the second stage playing catch-up - only points against fellow qualifiers are carried through.
Smith continued: "Now we're going to play the four sides from the other group, who are obviously playing reasonably well.
"For us it's a simple equation now. We have four games and we're going to have to win them all."
