Rowan praises cricket opportunities in Scotland
Forget silver spoons. Talent is name of the game
On Sunday, 17 year-old Willie Rowan from Ayrshire will make his debut in the Scotland under-19 squad.
It will also be the day the representative team plays its inaugural match (against Poloc) in the Premier Division of the Scottish National Cricket League.
And according to Rowan, a promising opening bowler for 2nd division Prestwick CC, regardless of a player's background, the sport in Scotland is now providing youths with the talent and ambition every chance to achieve their dreams in the sport.
Having been introduced to cricket at Doon Academy comprehensive in Ayrshire and having seen members of his local business community donate over £10,000 to pay for his recent 3-month training stint in Australia, Rowan's rise through the ranks is perhaps further evidence of the sport shedding an outdated image of being the preserve of those born with a silver spoon.
"In Scotland, the opportunity for young cricketers is now fantastic," said Rowan. "By playing in a decent club and with our District and Scotland set-up I believe anyone can make it," he added.
"I honestly think if someone tries hard enough for what they want they can get it if they've the determination and motivation," Rowan continued.
"That's what it's like for me in cricket. It doesn't matter where I come from. If I focus on my goal and try hard enough, I'll reach my goal," explained the aspiring Scottish professional.
