Goudie impresses but Scotland are well beaten by Aussies
Gordon Goudie returned figures of five for 73 against Australia but couldn’t prevent Scotland crashing to a heavy one-day international defeat against the wounded Aussies.
The 22-year-old was Scotland’s stand-out performer in Edinburgh taking the prized wicket of stand-in skipper Michael Clarke and wrapping up the tail as Australia amassed 345 from their 50 overs.
In response Scotland could only manage 156, with Gavin Hamilton top scoring with 38 as Australia bounced back from surrendering the ashes to wrap up victory by 189 runs.
Shane Watson opened for the visitors with a quick 68 off only 43 balls, David Warner was then out for a duck after facing five balls before Clarke was bowled on 16 by Goudie for the first of his wickets.
David Hussey put the visitors out of sight with 111 runs before Chris White and Adam Vogues scored 72 and 19 respectively and Tim Paine contributed an undefeated 29.
Goudie then took the Australian bottom order apart by dismissing the final four batsmen for only 16 runs to give Scotland a glimmer of hope.
Hamilton began brightly for Scotland running away to 38 before he was caught by Watson off a Hussey delivery.
Fraser Watts scored 24 and Ryan Watson made 10 before the fit-again Brett Lee delivered a trademark delivery to dismiss him.
Scotland’s hopes were all but gone when Qasim Sheikh was out for two but Neil McCallum and Richie Berrington put up some resistance in the middle order scoring 49 runs between them before the lower order was dismissed for only 22 runs.
