Bronze for Campbell

Martin Campbell, the Bank of Scotland Scottish Junior Champion, clinched a bronze medal with a victory over fellow-Scot Paul Van Rietvelde at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune, India.

Both boys had suffered straight games defeats in the semi-finals. Campbell lost 14-21 17-21 to Aditya Prakash, while Van Rietvelde went out 13-21 12-21 to

R-M Gurusaidutt.

In the bronze play-off, Edinburgh’s Campbell justified his status as Scotland’s top 18-year-old with a 21-13 21-17 victory over his Longniddry colleague.

Campbell and Van Rietvelde will stay on in Pune for the World Junior Championships starting next week – an event that will be even tougher with the addition of the Chinese team.

Craig Pollock, Angus Gilmour, Gillian Sloan and Kirsty McGlynn are the other Scots in the world championships squad.
