British finals to be held at Ratho
The rising stars of Scottish climbing will be in action in Edinburgh next Saturday (28th June) when Britain's biggest climbing competition gets underway at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena (EICA) at Ratho.

Over 180 young climbers, aged between 7-16 years old are expected to compete in the British final of the British Mountaineering Council (BMC) / Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS) Youth Climbing Series.

The rock climbing event marks the finale of a winter-long series of regional competitions organised by the BMC in England and Wales and the MCofS in Scotland.

Third in his age-group at the British Lead Climbing Championships in Blackpool in May, 16 year-old Ross Kirkland from Edinburgh is among the young Scots who will hope to grab gold at the Brits.

Kirkland will be joined in the competition by almost twenty other leading Scottish climbers.

The top three climbers from the MCofS Youth Climbing Series and in each (male and female) age-group (8-10, 11-13, 14-16) qualified for the British Finals.

However, 15 year-old Jonathan Stocking from Kilwinning and a previous (age group) winner of both the MCofS Youth Series and at last month's Lead Climbing Championships won't compete at Ratho following his promotion into the British Junior Climbing Team.

As the world's largest indoor climbing arena, the EICA is a fitting venue for the British Finals and one where the finalists will be expected to prove their mettle by scaling boulder 'problems' and tackle routes on sheer, overhanging walls up to 25 metres high.

Kevin Howett, Mountaineering Council of Scotland (MCofS) Development Officer, said: "This is essentially a fun competition but I'm sure the tension will be high at the final as everybody wants to win."

He added:

"The Scottish kids are hoping to do extremely well this year on the back of the impressive performances in the recent Scottish Finals at Extreme Dream in Aviemore.

The success of their friends (like Stocking) in the British Lead Climbing Championships recently, will certainly spur them on to do their best on home turf at Ratho."
