Walsh blasts his own performance despite winning Olympic spot
By his own admission, 30 year-old Campbell Walsh was far from impressed by his performance in the final GB selection race at Nottingham on Sunday.
Asked how the 2004 Olympic silver medallist felt after securing GB's sole men's K1 canoe slalom bib for the 2008 Olympics, the consummate professional was more in the mood to berate himself for being 16 seconds behind winner Richard Hounslow on Sunday.
"I train to perform well and today wasn't a performance. I even missed a gate and had to paddle back for it," said Walsh. "To be honest, I'm more annoyed about my race than thinking about the fact I've qualified for the Olympics."
But if Sunday was an off-day for the Glasgow born kayaker, he still had time to reflect on the fact GB's Olympic canoe slalom team is shaping up to be an all Scottish affair.
For on Sunday, C1 class specialist David Florence, the 25 year-old from Aberdeen also did enough in the three-series selection trials to ensure his name will be put forward to the British Olympic Association for official ratification in May.
As a result, Walsh, Florence and Fiona Pennie (women's K1) should all be donning Olympic tracksuits this August.
A fact that makes Walsh, who competes with a Saltire emblazoned helmet, very proud.
"It's cool. So far, it's an all Scottish canoe slalom team (for the Games). That's good news for the sport in Scotland and for Scotland as a nation," he said.
What's more, should Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott win gold in the C2 class at next month's European Championships in Krakow, Scots born Baillie may also have just done enough to secure his own Olympic place.
