Willie Limond looks to Super Featherweight as new option
Former WBU Lightweight champion Willie Limond, who recently relinquished his world title, has indicated that he would be interested in dropping back down to Super Featherweight to challenge for the Commonwealth title, which is likely to be vacated by current champion, Ricky Burns of Coatbridge.
Burns is hoping to secure a World Title fight against Puerto Rican WBO champion Roman Martinez early in the New Year and if, as expected, he relinquishes the Commonwealth belt in order to do so, Glasgow-based Limond will be looking to put himself forward for the vacant title.
“I want to win titles” said Limond, whose only two defeats in his 32-fight professional career have been against future world champions Alex Arthur and Amir Khan, “and, while it was great to be WBU world champion, I haven’t been able to arrange any defences and I’ve been forced to hand back the belt as it was preventing me from challenging for further titles.
“There are very few opportunities for me at lightweight just now so I’m seriously considering going back to Super Featherweight. I won’t have any problem making the 9 stone 4 pounds limit and I feel there’s much more scope for me in that division.”
A possible opponent for 30 year old Limond would be Dagenham fighter Kevin Mitchell, the current British champion.
