Burns pushed all the way in Commonwealth title defence
Coatbridge super-featherweight Ricky Burns was forced to dig deep to retain his Commonwealth title against Belfast's Kevin O'Hara last night.
Burns, fighting in front of a home crowd in Glasgow, connected with more telling punches but O'Hara refused to throw in the towel and pushed the Scot all the way to 12 rounds.
The judges eventually scored the bout 117-110, 115-113, 117-111 to give the 26-year old Scot his third successful defence.
"I let him into the fight more than I should have but take nothing away from Kevin, it was a tough fight," said Burns.
"I didn't see the fight going the distance, but Kevin is a tough laddie.
"Towards the end, the left hand to the body was hurting him a good bit, but whatever I was throwing at Kevin he was throwing something right back."
Meanwhile, Edinburgh's Alex Arthur overcame Mohammed Benbiou with a first-round victory on the undercard.
