Ricky Burns to face Steve Foster Jr in Commonwealth title bout
Super-featherweight Ricky Burns has set his sights on Kevin Mitchell's British title after announcing he will defend his Commonwealth belt for a third time in Glasgow on June 19.
Burns, from Coatbridge, will fight Steve Foster Jr next month as he aims to hold on to the title he won against Osumana Akaba when the belt was vacant in September 2008.
But despite the high-profile defence, the 26-year-old Scot has already targeted a clash with England's Mitchell.
"After I've done the business against Foster Jr I'm going after Kevin Mitchell's British title," said Burns.
"I'm gradually cleaning up domestically. Mitchell has been running from me for years.
"This time last year people were telling me that I'm not a puncher, but I've won my last two inside the distance and I'm going to be handing out some more pain to Foster at Bellahouston Sports Centre.
"I'm aiming to send out a message to Mitchell, and to do that I need to knock Foster out, and that's what is going to happen."
Burns has already successfully defended his title twice - against Yakubu Amidu of Ghana in November and against Dublin-born Michael Gomez in March.
On a big night for Scottish boxing Alex Arthur will be on the undercard for his first fight since rising to lightweight.
