Ham stands between boxer Stemp and Dehli

Scottish amateur bantamweight champion Gareth Stemp is determined to be on the plane to next year’s Commonwealth Games in India after being named in the provisional Scottish squad.

The 25-year-old has been named in the shortlist alongside British lightweight champion Connor McCallum and Glasgow junior bantam champion Joe Ham – who he faces in the ring next month.

And Stemp – who trains at Holyrood Boxing Gymnasium – knows that beating Ham in Auchengeich would be the perfect way to cement his claim on one of the places in the squad.

He said: “The decision to bracket my name with Ham’s in the list makes our upcoming clash on September 16 a whole new ball game.

“Victory for either one of us will strengthen the winners claim to go to the 2010 games so there is even more at stake.

“I'll be going all out in my training to ensure that I win next month – I just need to keep doing my thing so I can get to Delhi.”
