Steven Ross bags silver medal after first GB cap at Buckinghamshire tournament
After receiving his first call-up to the GB junior squad at the weekend for the Astra Tech Junior Challenge Tournament at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium in Buckinghamshire, 17 year old Steven Ross returned to his home in Edinburgh delighted with a silver medal.
The Astra Tech Junior Challenge included teams from Germany, Sweeden, Belguim, Italy and Netherlands.
The GB side exceeded expectations by getting to the final thanks to a fantastic performance in the semi final against Sweden, one of the pre-tournament favourites, setting up a tough encounter with a strong Germany team.
Steven put in a solid performance over the weekend capping it off with getting his first points in a Great Britain jersey. After his experience, Steven said, “ I was quite nervous when I first got on the court but the nerves soon disappeared when one of the Dutch players knocked me out of my chair after only being on the court for ten seconds. Now I’ve seen how good the players are from across Europe, it has given me a good idea of what I need to work on to get better in the future.”
Steven will be straight back into training with his club team, Lothian Phoenix, as they prepare for their first season in the GBWBA Division One (North), following their second promotion in two years. As the club’s first ever Great Britain representative, Steven will be instrumental in the Phoenix’s campaign next season.
