GB fall to Spain

Great Britain’s basketball team slumped to their fourth defeat in a week – despite welcoming back influential Scot Robert Archibald.

Chris Finch's side were soundly beaten by world champions Spain - group opponents at next month’s European Championships - in the first match of a four-nation warm-up tournament in Seville.

After being beaten by Poland, Turkey and Israel in London last week, the last thing Finch probably needed was this tough encounter.

And despite welcoming back Archibald, Flinder Boyd, Andy Betts and captain Andrew Sullivan, his side were soundly beaten 84-63.

Spain were even missing LA Lakers star man Pau Gasol, absent with a broken finger, but still included NBA stars Rudy Fernandez and Ricky Rubio.

“Rob played well, he was in the right place at the right time,” said Finch. “He didn’t finish off many plays but this was about getting him out there and getting confidence back.

“In the first half we had chances to be in the game but when you play a team of this calibre they do such a good job at keeping you at bay.

“They got a ten-point advantage and then kept us there. There were some positives to take out of the game; it was good having Andy (Betts) and Rob (Archibald) back on the floor plus Nate (Reinking) shot well.”

Britain play Lithuania today while Spain take on Slovenia.
