Young Scots lose to Swedes

Martin Campbell and Kirsty Gilmour won the two singles points - but Scotland suffered a hugely disappointing 2-3 defeat to  Sweden on the opening day of the European Junior Championships in Milan.

Campbell, the Bank of Scotland Scottish under-19 champion, gave the Scots a first point with a 21-13 21-12 over Mathias Borg, and 15-year-old Gilmour battled to a 21-4 13-21 21-19 victory over Elinor Widh in the girls’ singles.

Having lost the opening mixed tie – Paul Van Rietvelde and Gillian Sloan went down in three games - Campbell and Angus Gilmour, who are seeded in the top four for the individual events, then threw away the opportunity to clinch the tie.

In the boys’ doubles, Oscar Kruse, who also played mixed, and Patrik Lundqvist pulled off the shock result in relatively easy fashion with a 21-13 21-19 scoreline.

With the outcome hanging on the result of the girls’ doubles, the Mauchline pair of Kaity Hall and Kirsten Geals went down 17-21 17-21 to Sara and Sanna Theodorsson and it left Sweden as the 3-2 winners.

Scotland now meet Turkey and the Ukraine in the round-robin section – and will have to rely on Sweden losing a match to have a chance to qualify for the quarter-finals.
