Gordon Thomson and Susan Hughes secure Yonex Scottish Championships
Glasgow’s Gordon Thomson was delighted to regain the Yonex Scottish National Championship men’s singles trophy after a straight games win in the final over East Kilbride’s No. 1 seed Craig Goddard .
The Glasgow 23-year-old has had to come back from a broken ankle since he first won the title two years ago, while he also reckoned that a run to the title that included a semi-final win over No.2 seed Kieran Merrilees confirmed he is well worth his recent inclusion in the GB squad.
“This is a reward for a lot of hard work,” said Thomson after the 21-19 21-15 victory over three-time champion, Goddard. “I know a lot of people were saying that I shouldn’t be getting GB funding, so I did feel I had a wee bit of a point to prove.”
In an all-Glasgow final, Susan Hughes claimed the women’s singles for a fourth time with a comfortable 21-13 21-8 win over youngster Linda Sloan.
“I was under a lot of pressure because I was firm favourite,” said the 26-year-old Commonwealth Games medallist.
“But I always felt in control and never really gave Linda a sniff of the title. I’ve underperformed at these Championships in the past, but now I’m feeling much more confident about my game.”
Edinburgh’s Jillie Cooper collected her first Yonex Scottish National title in the women’s doubles - and the 20-year-old also collected second place in the mixed event.
Cooper, who won the Bank of Scotland International title with her English partner Mariana Agathangelou at the Kelvin Hall in November, teamed up with Glasgow’s Imogen Bankier for a first time.
Facing a scratch partnership of Hughes and Sloan in the final, they had to survive a close first game before coming through to win 24-22 21-16.
In the mixed, Cooper and Andy Bowman, the No. 2 seeds, also put up a good battle against holders
In the mixed final, Bankier and Watson Briggs retained the title with a 21-19 21-15 winning scoreline against Cooper and Andy Bowman. Briggs also won the men’s doubles with Livingston’s Thomas Bethell.
Edinburgh’s Emma Mason, in her first tournament since a serious Achilles injury last year, went out in the second round of the mixed doubles. Playing alongside Livingston’s Thomas Bethell, she lost 19-21 18-21 to Longniddry’s Paul Van Rietvelde and Glasgow’s Gillian Sloan.
