Susan Egelstaff wins Bank of Scotland International Championships
Scotland’s Susan Egelstaff claimed it was the best win of her career after she beat top seed Ella Diehl in the women’s singles final at the Bank of Scotland International Championships at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall.
Up against two-time former winner, the 27-year-old dismissed the Russian in just 37 minutes with a 21-18 21-10 victory. Having clinched the win, she significantly pointed to her outgoing coach, Dan Travers. He gives up the High Performance coaching job in January
“I wanted to win this for Dan, and it just feels great, ” said Glasgow’s Egelstaff, who had never been beyond the semi-finals under her maiden name of Hughes. “Ella is higher than me in the world rankings (23 to 37) and this is my best performance ever.
“I felt I started a little slowly and then gained confidence as the match went on. But, I must admit, I got a little nervy towards the end trying to close it out.”
In the women’s doubles, Edinburgh’s Emma Mason and new partner Mariana Agathangelou did exceptionally well to reach the final. On the way, they had beaten the Danish No.2 seeds, Helle Nielsen and Mari Ropke, and Scotland’s Jillie Cooper, who also had a rookie partner in Samantha Ward
Cooper won the title last year with Agathangelou – it was a quirk of the GB selection process that they did not defend together – and Mason had hoped to maybe follow in her footsteps.
But the Russian top seeds, Valeria Sorokina and Nina Vislova proved to be a match too far. The favourites need just 32 minutes to claim the first title of the afternoon with a 21-16 21-16 victory.
“I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t play quite as well in the final as we did yesterday,” said the 23-year-old. “But it was a great run and we beat the world No.15 players in Nielsen and Ropke.
For Mason, it was also a great completion of an 18 month comeback from a snapped Achilles injury that could have ended her year. In view of her form and perseverance she was a deserved recipient yesterday of the Robert McCoig Memorial Trophy for the Championship’s outstanding performance by a Scot.
