Susan Egelstaff wins hard-fought opener at World Championships in India
Competing for the first time as a married woman, Scottish Champion Susan Egelstaff (formerly Hughes) had a great result in the first round of the women’s singles at the world championships in Hyderabad, India.
While controversy raged on following the England tam’s decision to fly home before the start of the championships due to security concerns, the former Susan Hughes defeated Finland’s Anu Nieminen 21-19 22-20 in an extremely tight 37 minute match.
Egelstaff’s reward is a second round tie against the No.4 seed from China, Yihan Wang.
In the men’s singles, Scot Alistair Casey took the opening game against Bulgarian youngster, Stillan Makarski, but eventually lost out 21-18 18-21 13-21.
Following England's decision to withdraw from the Championships on security grounds, the only other British hopes are Welsh mixed doubles pair Richard Vaughan and Sarah Thomas, who after a first-round bye will face seventh seeded Danes Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl.
