

Scots progress into last 16 of Bulgarian International
Scottish Champion Susan Egelstaff, the No.3 seed, had a straightforward passage into the last 16 of the Bulgarian International in Sofia when her first round opponent, Alesia Zaitsava (Belarus), retired through injury.
The Scot had taken the first game 21-11 and led 18-4 in the second when the Zaitsava pulled out of the women’s singles.
In the men’s singles, Glasgow’s Kieran Merrilees ousted local favourite Stiliyan Makarski 21-14 21-15, but Scottish Champion Gordon Thomson failed to pull off a shock against No.3 seed Henri Hurskainen. The Swede won 21-17 21-18.
At the Bitburger Open in Germany, Edinburgh’s Jillie Cooper, making her comeback from a foot operation, and England’s Mariana Agathangelou lost in the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles.
The Bank of Scotland Scottish International Champions went out 15-21 12-21 to the Danish No.3 seeds, Line Damkjaer Kruse and Mie Schjoett-Kristensen.
