Susan’s bid for Glasgow glory

Scotland’s Susan Hughes is set to be one of the top three women's singles seeds at the Bank of Scotland Scottish International Championships from November 19-23.

The 26-year-old Commonwealth bronze medallist reached the high of the semi-finals in 2005 – but suffered a disappointing first round exit to China’s Li Wenyan last year.

Her main rivals this time will be two-time champion Ella (Karachkova) Diehl of Russia and 2007 runner-up Elizabeth Cann, the three-times English National champion from Jersey who lost to Hughes in the Commonwealth bronze medal play-off in Australia.

Cann is ranked No 26 in the world with Hughes No 31 and Diehl No 37 in the latest rankings (Nov 6) and they can expect to fill the top three places in Glasgow.

Hughes has already reached the final of the Belgian and Bulgarian Opens this season and defeated world top ten player Wong Mew Choo (Malaysia) in last month’s French Open Super Series.

Glasgow’s Imogen Bankier and Edinburgh-born Robert Blair will be defending the mixed doubles title.
