Scotland's Andrew Bowman and England's Matthew Honey made a confident start to the Spanish Open in Madrid with a 21-13 21-18 win over Patrick Neubacher and Tim Zander in the first round of the men's doubles.

The reward is a tie against Danish top seeds - Andres Kristiansen and Simon Mollyhus - for a place in the quarter-finals.

But there was no joy for the all-Scottish pairing of Watson Briggs and Thomas Bethell. They lost 21-17 21-9 to the Indonesian stars, Fran Kurniawan and Rendra Wijawa.

Scotland's top singles Susan Hughes was a late withdrawal. The Commonwealth Games medallist is suffering from back trouble - but she is still in the draw for next week's Toulouse Open.
