Special month for Scottish juniors

Edinburgh’s Martin Campbell. Troon’s Angus Gilmour and the Longniddry pair of Paul Van Rietvelde and Craig Pollock face a thrilling double-header in India this month when they take part in the Commonwealth Youth Games and then the World Junior Badminton Championships.

Two girls – Kirsty McGlynn (Greenock) and Gillian Sloan (Glasgow) – will be joining the boys for the World Championships.

Martin warmed up for the trip to Pune by winning two Bank of Scotland Under-19 Scottish Championships. He took the singes and teamed up with Angus to win the doubles.

Paul also became a national winner by retaining the mixed title with Gillian, and he admitted it was the perfect send-off.

“I’m really excited about the next few weeks,” admitted Paul. “The competition is going to be very stiff at the Youth Games with players from Malaysia, India and Singapore as well as England.  But, hopefully, we will be right up there.

”The World Championships will be even tougher with China added to the mix. But I still think we could be right up there.”

Marin, Angus and Paul are all full-time players and all are in the target pipeline for the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Pune is an important step along the way.

The Youth Games get underway on Sunday, while the World Junior Badminton Championships start on October 24.
