

Tournament wins for Linda Sloan and Andrew Gilliland at weekend
Glasgow’s Linda Sloan got her badminton season off to a flying start after claiming the Yorkshire Elite Open women’s singles title in Sheffield.
Sloan stormed to the final after beating promising English youngster and second seed Panuga Riou 16-21, 21-16, 21-14 in the semi-finals.
And the Glasgow ace went one better in the final again coming from behind again to see of title favourite Helen Davies 17-21, 21-11, 21-14.
Sloan’s success didn’t stop there as she reach the semi-final of the women’s double alongside England’s Fontaine Chapman only to fall to Mariana Agathangelou and Heather Olver 21-9, 21-19.
Elsewhere Andrew gilliland, from Bearsden in Glasgow is also celebrating today after winning the men’s singles title at the Bulgarian Junior Tournament in Pazardzhik City on Sunday.
The 18-year-old lifted the trophy without dropping a game until the final. He followed up a first-round walkover by beating Bulgarian Gergin Nedalyalkov in the second round and in the quarter and semi-finals he put out Turkey’s Akin Senol and Tolga Ozsoy.
In the final he avenged 18-year-old joint fifth seed Danny Leinster’s first-round defeat by Emre Lale by beating the unseeded Turkish player 23-21 22-24 21-16 in a keenly-contested encounter.
Gilliland and Leinster (Glasgow) teamed up in the doubles and reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual winners Ramazan Ozturk and Emre Vural 21-19 21-18.
In the mixed Gilliland reached the last eight before he and Sonia Olariu (Rom), the joint third seeds, went out. Leinster and Bulgaria’s Viktoria Tsvetanova fell in the first round.
