Scots to face Danes

Bothwell’s Kirsty Gilmour, who is the No.2 seed in the individual singles, helped the Scottish team make it two wins out of two with a 3-2 scorline against Croatia on day two of the European Under-17 Team Championships in Medvode in Slovenia .

The Scots beat Norway 5-0 in the opening tie and now face favourites Denmark in the last of the round-robin matches to decide the winners of Group 1.

For the second day in succession, 16-year-old Gilmour, winner of the Bank of Scotland Scottish Under-19 Championship last month, gave Scotland a winning start with a 21-12 21-8 victory over Katarina Jagodic in the girls’ singles.

Matthew Carder lost a tight boys’ singles to Martija Hranilovic, but Caitlin Pringle and Emma Cook hit back to win the girls’ doubles in straight game and Carder made amends for his earlier defeat by taking the boys’ doubles point 21-13 21-17 with Lewis Gallacher.

In the dead mixed doubles rubber, Josh Neil and Rebekka Findlay lost 18-21 14-21 to Dorian Zitnik and Lucija Vahl.

Denmark beat both Croatia and Norway by 5-0 to set up the Group 1 showdown.
