Scots launch season in style in Belgium
Great start to the new season for the Scots competing at the Yonex Belgian International.

Pride of place went to the experienced Andy Bowman, who won the men's doubles in partnership with Welsh partner Martin Lewis. The British pair combined perfectly in the final to trounce Germany's Peter Kaesbauer and Roman Spitko 21-14 21-15.

With the Olympic disappointment now out of the way, Susan Hughes, seeded No.4, got her season off and running by reaching the women's singles final.

The Commonwealth medallist, who was upset not to make Team GB for Beijing, scored an impressive 21-15 21-9 win over German Janet Koehler to upset the rankings and reach the final.

But she couldn't quite overcome another German, Juliane Schenk, at the final hurdle. The Scot lost a close battle 12-21 18-21.

In the mixed doubles, Jillie Cooper, who has recently joined the GB programme, and Watson Briggs also reached the final and put up a spirited fight before losing 13-21 9-21 to Russians Nina Vislova and Vitaly Durkin.

Jillie and her new English partner, Mariana Agathangelou, made it to the semi-finals of the women's doubles where they lost 16-21 12-21 to top seeds and eventual title winners, Valeria Sorokina and Nina Vislova of Russia.

In the men's singles Gordon Thomson and Kenneth Young were the top performers by getting through three rounds in the qualifying.

Dan Travers, team coach, was delighted with the early season efforts. "The win will stand Andrew in great stead for the future," said Travers. "It was a fantastic few days for the whole team and to come away from such a prestigious tournament with so many good results speaks volumes for the hard work and dedication over the summer."
