Scots chasing victory

Scotland’s Jamie Neill and Kenneth Young both survived three rounds of qualifying to make the men’s singles draw at the Welsh Open in Cardiff.

Neill beat Denmark’s Christoph Heininger 21-19 14-21 21-10 in the final round to make the top 64, while Young won an all-Scottish tie against Martin Campbell 21-13 21-6.

Neill’s reward is a first round tie against Scotland’s 18-year-old rising star, Kieran Merrilees, who made the third round of last week’s Bank of Scotland International Championships in Glasgow.

Former Scottish Champion Gordon Thomson is the fourth Scot in the main draw

Jillie Cooper, who won the women’s doubles in Glasgow, is aiming for more podium places in Cardiff. She is top seed with Watson Briggs in the mixed doubles and No.3 seed with Mariana Agathangelou in the women’s doubles .

“I had a great couple of days at home enjoying the success last Sunday,” said Cooper, who is based with the GB squad at Milton Keynes.

“It still seems surreal to think that I have won a Bank of Scotland International title. It was great to be able to rise to the occasion of playing at home, and to win my first European title with so many friends and family in the audience.”

“It is just the spur I need as I look ahead to landmarks such as the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games and, hopefully, the 2012 Olympic Games in London.”
