Scotland to face India again at Sudirman Cup

Scotland have once again been drawn against India at the Sudirman Cup, which gets under way in China next month.

A ten-strong squad, led by Chinese-born coach Rita Yuan Gao, flew to their China-based training camp in Wuhan province on Monday to prepare for the 34-nation competition, which begins on May 10.

Last time out in Glasgow, two years ago, Scotland finished 19th out of 48 entrants, having defeat New Zealand and Finland, before crashing to group favourites India.

And the Scots will be faced with the same task next month, having been drawn in the Group 3B along with Ukraine, Australia and India.

In Group 3A Sweden, USA, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria will be in competition. The winners of 3A and 3B will meet in the match to determine which team will be promoted to Group 2.

Andy Bowman, Gordon Thomson, Imogen Bankier, Emma Mason and Susan Hughes are the survivors from the Glasgow campaign although Thomas Bethell and Linda Sloan, both reserves in 2007, step up to the main squad.

Yuan Gao also played in the last two Cups in Beijing and Glasgow but is now back in the country of her birth as team manager for the first time.

Longniddry's Paul Van Rietvelde, who has just returned from the European Junior Championships in Milan, having reached the last 16 in the boys' doubles, has also been promoted to the squad.

Kieran Merrilees and Bank of Scotland International champion Jillie Cooper take the other two places in the squad.
