New road to Delhi

BADMINTONscotland has taken a bold move and is to make major changes to the coaching set up in a bid for medal success at the 2010 Commonwealth games in Delhi and, looking even further ahead, the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow .

In a joint decision agreed by BADMINTONscotland and sportscotland, the high performance programme will be restructured and moved under the full responsibility of BADMINTONscotland. The programme will continue to benefit from a full range of support services through the sportscotland Institute of Sport.

BADMINTONscotland Chief Executive Anne Smillie explained: "Under the new structure, three new posts will be created and will be openly recruited in due course. We believe this will be a more effective way of delivering the high performance programme moving forwards."

The three new roles will be Performance Manager, Head Coach and High Performance Coach.

Smillie added: "The current junior and senior performance programmes will come under the control of the new Head Coach who will also have an assistant in due course.  All performance matters will be then managed by a new Performance Manager.

BADMINTONscotland also confirmed that there will be a further new position of National Development Coach.

And Smillie said: "We are excited by the prospect of this new post of National Development Coach, whose job will be to develop and identify talent at a much younger age.  This will mean, however, that the post of Junior High Performance Coach is no longer part of the structure."

The three key coaches in post at present - National High Performance coach Dan Travers , Assistant Coach Rita Yuan Gao and Junior High Performance Coach Diana Koleva - will all be eligible to apply for the new positions.
