

Kieran Merrilees beats Scottish Champion at Finnish International Championships
Kieran Merrilees won an all-Scottish clash and scored a first victory over National Champion Gordon Thomson at the Finnish International Championships at Vaanta.
The Glasgow 19-year-old had been promoted from the qualifying event, and made the most of his good luck by defeating Thomson 21-17 19-21 21-14 and earning a last 16 match against England’s No. 3 seed, Raj Ouseph.
Thomson beat Merriles on his way to asecond Yonex National title in Perth in February.
In the women’s singles, Scottish Champion Susan Hughes, the No. 6 seed, opened with a comfortable 21-13 21-17 win over Holland’s Patty Stolzenbach.
In the mixed doubles, Scots Jillie Cooper and Imogen Bankier enjoyed success with English partners.
Cooper and Chris Langridge, who has come through two rounds of qualifying, came from behind to beat Russia’s Ivan Sozonov and Anastasia Propokenko 16-21 22-20 21-12, while Bankier and Robin Middleton crushed Austria’s Heimo Gotschi and Claudia Mayer 21-7 21-7.
