

Calum Menzies wins West of Scotland championship
Calum Menzies showed great form to beat favourite Gordon Hoggan in the semi-finals and then went on to take the West of Scotland singles title at Glasgow’s Cockburn Centre with a 21-14 21-12 win over Stephen McPhail in the final.
There was also an upset in the men’s doubles with No.2 seeds, Jamie Neill and Keith Turnbull, overcoming top seeds, Peter Hockey and Duncan Leith. After a closely contested match Neill and Turnbull emerged the victors 22-20, 21-16.
In the women’s singles, Rita Yuan Gao, the former Bank of Scotland International Championship winner who has now retired from major competitions, proved she is still a strong force.
Unseeded Helen McCombe reached the final, but couldn’t quite pull off victory as she lost 6-21 12-21 to Yuan Gao.
The Chinese-born Scot claimed a second title when she teamed up with Kathryn Graham and snatched the women’s doubles with a 21-18 21-15 win pver the up-and-coming youngsters, Emma Cook and Caitlin Pringle.
In the mixed event, Colin Hill and Alison Laing staged an impressive defence by defeating Hockey and Lindsay Campbell 21-17, 22-20 in the final.
