Martin Campbell to head Scottish team in European Junior Championships
Edinburgh’s Martin Campbell, the first Scot to be named the British Junior Player of the Year, will head Scotland’s team for the European Junior Championships in Milan next month.
The Commonwealth Youth Games medallist will be joined by Angus Gilmour, Paul Van Rietvelde, Steven Stewart, Kirsty Gilmour, Kirsten Gaels, Gillian Sloan, Kaity Hall and Gillian Sloan.
The eight players will contest the team event from April 3-7 and then stay on to compete in the individual event from April 7-12.
In the team event, the Scots have been drawn alongside Sweden, Turkey and the Ukraine.
"Several of the squad members have already taken part in the Commonwealth Youth Games and World Junior Championships in Pune, India, this season so they have already had a taste of competition at the highest level,” said Anne Smillie, the Chief Executive of Badmintonscotland.
“We hope that will give them the impetus to do well in Milan because we feel we have a talented squad of players. They represent the future of Scottish badminton.”
Team squad:
Boys:?Martin Campbell ( Edinburgh), Angus Gilmour (Troon), Steven Stewart (Bonhill), Paul Van Rietvelde (Longniddry)
Girls:?Kirsten Geals (Mauchline), Kirsty Gilmour (Bothwell), Kaity Hall (Mauchline), Gillian Sloan ( Glasgow)
For the individual events, Fraser Michie (Motherwell) will join the squad for the boys' singles and mixed doubles (partnering Kaity Hall) and Craig Pollock (Longniddry) will arrive to partner Paul Van Rietvelde in the doubles.
Catriona Lawlor (Cumbernauld) will be added to the squad to contest the girls' doubles with Kaity Hall and the mixed with Angus Gilmour.
