Martin Campbell has sights set on silverware at European Junior Championships
Edinburgh’s Martin Campbell leads Scotland’s team into this week’s European Junior Championships in Milan – and he’s got his eyes on a medal.
The 18-year-old is seeded in the top eight in the boys’ singles and is joint third – with Troon’s Angus Gilmour – in the doubles.
The reigning Bank of Scotland Under-19 Champion in both events, Campbell is seeking the perfect follow-up to the bronze he collected at the Commonwealth Youth Games in India last November.
“It would be great to get another medal in Milan, and that’s definitely my aim,” said the capital teenager. “I also hope we can put up a good performance in the team event.
“The singles is going to be very hard, but I think that Angus and I have a real chance in the doubles.”
In the mixed event, Scotland also has a great medal chance with Longniddry’s Paul Van Rietvelde and Gillian Sloan (Glasgow) seeded No.2.
The team championship starts on Friday, and the young Scots are in a round-robin group alongside Sweden, Turkey and the Ukraine.
“It’s quite a tough group, but we won’t fear any of the sides,” continued Campbell. “We definitely have a chance to finish No.1 and go through to the quarter-finals. Mind you, then we are due to meet the Netherlands, and that would be a really difficult one.”
The full Scottish team is Campbell, Gilmour, Van Rietvelde, Sloan, Steven Stewart (Bonhill), Kirsty Gilmour (Bothwell), Kaity Hall and Kirsten Gaels (both Mauchline)
The following will also be joining the squad for the individual championships starting on Monday, April 6: Craig Pollock (Longniddry), Fraser Michie (Motherwell) and Catriona Lawlor (Cumbernauld)
