Sloan progresses while Cooper drops out of the Swedish Open
Glasgow teenager Linda Sloan was the star of the Scottish squad with an opening round singles win over Portugal’s Ana Moura at the Swedish Open in Stockholm.
But there was double disappointment in the first round for Bank of Scotland International Champion Jillie Cooper.
In the women’s doubles, the Edinburgh 20-year-old and England’s Mariana Agathangelou lost out in a marathon match 23-21 19-21 16-21 to Sweden’s Elin Bergblom and the vastly experienced Dutch player, Judith Meulendijks.
In the mixed doubles, Cooper and Renfrew’s Watson Briggs were the No.3 seeds, but crashed out 14-21 15-21 to England’s unseeded Robert Adcock and Heather Olver.
Sloan, a qualifier, opened her account in the main draw with an emphatic 21-18 21-9 victory over Moura and set up a last 16 meeting with Denmark’s Karina Jorgensen.
In the men’s singles, former Scottish Champion Gordon Thomson went out to the former Bank of Scotland International Champion Ville Lang (Finland) 15-21 13-21.
