

Kirsty Gilmour looking strong at European under-17s
Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour, the No.2 seed, opened her bid for the girls’ singles title with a straightforward 2-18 21-13 win over Switzerland’s Nicole Ankl in the second round at the European under-17 Championships at Medvode in Slovenia.
The Bothwell 16-year-old, who had a first round bye, now meets the Czech Republic’s Kaja Stankovic for a place in the last 16.
Fellow-Scot Rebekka Findlay, who won a close first day match, took the opening game against Sweden’s Matilda Nygren-Strandberg, but lost the next two to go out 21-17 17-21 8-21.
In the boys’ singles Scotland’s Matthew Carder beat Finland’s Mika Kongas 21-16 21-19, while Aitor Arraiza Imaz, from Spain, knocked out Josh Neil 18-21 21-19 21-11.
In the first round of the mixed doubles, Scotland’s seeded pair of Lewis Gallacher and Caitlin Pringle beat the Czech Republic’s Mitja Semrov and Kim Novak 21-10 21-15, but Carder and Emma Cook went out in three games to Akseli Danskanen and Jenny Nystrom.
The Fins won 21-19 19-21 21-15.
