Happy Gilmour marches to German under-17 title
Bothwell youngster Kirsty Gilmour produced a flawless display of badminton to scoop the under 17 women’s singles title at the Yonex Langenfeld Cup in Germany.
The 15-year-old began the tournament as the fifth seed but lost just one game – against second seed Josephine Van Zaane in the final – on her way to victory.
Gilmour is the reigning Bank of Scotland under 17 and under 19 national champion and showed her class on the continent, thrashing top seed Mette Poulsen 21-13, 21-12, in the quarter-finals.
But the Bank of Scotland under 19 doubles champion’s luck ran out in the doubles with Poulsen, and partner Celine Juel, gaining revenge with a 21-17, 21-18 win.
Team-mate Rebekka Findlay (Erskine) was Gilmour’s doubles partner and their second round exit capped a disappointing event for Findlay who bowed out in round one of the singles, losing to Linda Nafe of Germany 21-18, 12-21, 21-6.
In the under 15’s boy’s singles Josh Neil (Prestwick) suffered heartache losing in the final to Finish player Ikka Heino 21-13, 21-17
