Kieran beats seed – but misses quarter-finals

Scotland’s Kieran Merrilees added to his impressive collection of scalps by knocking out Estonia’s No.8 seed Raul Must 13-21 27-25 21-17 in the first round of the men’s singles at the Yonex Irish International in Dublin.

But the Glasgow 18-year-old then lost in the last 16 stage by 17-21 12-21 to Denmark’s Martin Delfs.

But it was another good tournament for Merrilees, who reached the quarter-finals of the Bank of Scotland International and the final of the Welsh International over the past two weekends,

The other two Scotssih men also went out. Gordon Thomson lost 18-21 12-21 to England’s Harry Wright and Kenneth Young was beaten 15-21 8-21 to Sweden’s Mathias Wigardt.

In the women’s singles, Glasgow’s Linda Sloan lost 15-21 7-21 to Bulgaria’s Linda Zechiri. That left No.2 seed Susan Hughes to carry Scottish hopes.
