Susan Hughes could face Commonwealth rival Cann in Dunfermline Open
Scotland’s Susan Hughes could face a rematch of her 2006 Commonwealth Games bronze medal encounter against England’s Elizabeth Cann at this weekend’s Yonex Dunfermline Open.
In a super line-up for the domestic event, Cann is top seed in the women’s singles and will be out to collect her second title in seven weeks north of the border – she won the Bank of Scotland International Championship at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow in November.
On that occasion, Hughes missed out on a clash with Cann when she suffered a shock semi-final defeat. But, this time, the Glasgow 26-year-old will be out to justify her No.2 seeding.
Edinburgh’s Jillie Cooper, who won the Bank of Scotland women’s doubles title, will be out to stage a repeat in Fife with her English partner, Mariana Agathangelou, while she is also tipped to defend the mixed title with Renfrew’s Watson Briggs.
Carl Baxter, from England, is the No.1 seed in the men’s singles ahead of fast rising Scot, 19-year-old Kieran Merrilees, while England’s Marcus Ellis and Matthew Honey are top seeds in the men’s doubles.
