Hughes hits out at officials

Scotland's Susan Hughes has taken a swipe at badminton officials after her British team funding was cut.

Hughes, who won women's singles bronze at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, believes she is suffering because of her decision to base herself in Scotland - rather than at the British team training camp in Milton Keynes.

"It's not right and the decision is out of order," said Hughes, who lost to unseeded Estonian Kati Tolmoff in the semi-finals at the Bank of Scotland Championships.

"I have the results to justify funding but they say the badminton centre in Scotland and the coaching set-up are not sufficient for world class performances.

"However, no-one has made the effort to come up here and see the work that is going on, so they are not qualified to say that.

"That means they can only judge me on results - which are clearly good enough."

Hughes believes British officials are protecting their own interest by refusing to acknowledge the work she is doing north of the border.

"Their focus is on Milton Keynes and developing that centre and they don't want anywhere else becoming a rival.

In contrast fellow Scot Jillie Cooper has elected to defer a place at Stirling University to join the British set-up, mixing playing with part-time studying at the Open University.
