Hughes and Bankier start strong

The Glasgow pair of Susan Hughes and Imogen Bankier both made impressive starts to the Denmark Open Super Series yesterday in Odense.

In the women’s singles, Hughes battled to a 21-18 19-21 21-17 victory over the Dutch player, Rachel Van Cutsen, who came in as a late replacement following the withdrawal of the No.8 seed from Malaysia, Mew Choo Wong.

The Scot, a finalist in the Belgian and Bulgarian Opens in recent weeks, trailed 12-16 in the opening game, and was 13-16 down in the decider before fighting back to earn a place in the last 16 against Poland’s Adrianti Firdasari.

In the mixed doubles, Bankier and her Edinburgh-born English partner, Robert Blair, cruised through 21-12 21-15 against the German pair of Johannes Schoettler and Birgit Overzier.

The No.6 seeds now face an intriguing tie against England’s 2004 Olympic silver medalist, Nathan Robertson, and his new partner, Jenny Wallwork. The rookie couple scored a convincing 21-18 21-14 victory over China’s Chen Xu and Pan Pan.
