Holly is double champ

Holly Newall (Mauchline) claimed two titles at the Bank of Scotland Under-11 Championships yesterday at the Scottish National Badminton Centre at Scotstoun in Glasgow.

With over 70 players taking part, Alex Dunn (Motherwell) also showed he is a name  to watch by winning the boys’ singles.

In the girls’ singles final, Holly, the No.1 seed, beat the second favourite Shona Whillans (Longniddry) by 21-8.

She then joined Cara McCulloch (Catrine) for the girls’ doubles and won a close final 22-20 against Bethany Cook (Mauchline) and Eleanor O’Donnell (Beith).

Alex was the favourite in the boys’ singles, and he won a final against one of the three Grimley brothers from Glasgow taking part in the championships. As a 5/8 seed, Christopher Grimley, one of twins, did well to make the last stage but Alex proved too strong and won 21-4.

In the boys’ doubles, the unseeded Stonehaven pair of Matthew Duguid (Hill of Forest) and Stuart Holley (Dunnotar) scored a surprise. They won the final 21-8 against Glasgow twins, Christopher and Matthew Grimley.
