Gilmour and Carder crash out in European under-17 quarter finals
Scottish under 19 champion Kirsty Gilmour crashed out in the quarter finals of the European under 17 championships after a straight games defeat in Medvode.
The 16-year old from Bothwell was seeded second in Slovenia but came unstuck against Danish fifth seed Line Kjærsfeldt, ultimately losing 21-14, 21-17.
Gilmour had cruised past Kjærsfeldt a week earlier in the team event but couldn’t reproduce her form in Slovenia and will now return to more familiar soil for the Bank of Scotland International Championships in Glasgow which starts on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Scotland’s last hopes in the boys’ singles and girls’ doubles also crashed out in the latter stages in Slovenia.
South Queensferry’s Matthew Carder had punched above his weight to reach the quarter finals but found Danish second seed Kim Bruun one match too many as he lost 21-11, 21-13.
Finally, Scottish under 19 doubles champions Emma Cook and Caitlin Pringle were downed by Ukrainian pair Mariyana Lysenko and Margaryta Malyarova in the last 16, losing a tight match 22-20, 21-19.
