Bothwell badminton star Kirsty Gilmour continued her impressive season by successfully defending her under 19 national crown in Edinburgh.

The 16-year old cruised through to the final at the Meadowbank Sports Centre and looked every bit the star as she crushed Mauchline’s Kaity Hall 21-9, 21-8 to lift the trophy.

Gilmour, who also tasted UK School Games success in Cardiff last month, was all set to add the girl’s doubles prize to her singles title, but she and partner Kirsten Geals came unstuck in the final, losing a tight match 21-17, 14-21, 21-14 to second seeds Emma Cook and Caitlin Pringle.

In the boy’s under 19 singles top seed Steven Stewart was upset by Matthew Carder in a whirlwind semi-final.

But the unseeded player from South Queensferry couldn’t muster his giant-killing skills in the final and went down 19-21, 21-15, 21-6 to Bearsden’s second seed Andrew Gilliland.

Patrick MacHugh and Craig Morrison took the boy’s doubles title while Paul van Rietvelde and Gillian Sloan retained their mixed doubles crown.

Meanwhile Josh Neil was the star of the under 15 events as he scooped the boy’s singles and doubles titles.

Sophie Morrison also helped herself to two under 15 titles, winning the girl’s doubles with sister Hannah and the mixed doubles with Adam Hall.
