Egelstaff lifts Yonex Dutch International title
Susan Egelstaff earned herself a boost in the world rankings just a week before the start of the Olympic qualifying race.

The six-times Yonex Scottish national champion defeated Canada’s fifth seed Michelle Li 21-18 13-21 21-15 to lift the women’s singles title at the Yonex Dutch International in Wateringen on Sunday.

And that should lift her in Thursday’s world rankings where she is currently just two places above England’s Elizabeth Cann at No. 41.

Egelstaff had booked her place in the final by beating Dutch player Patty Stolzenbach 21-14 21-7 in the semi-final, having knocked out seventh seed Karina Jorgensen in the quarter-finals 21-12 21-17.

The 28-year-old from Glasgow will sit out this week’s Portuguese International in Caldas da Rainha but will return to action in the Denmark International in Frederikshaven from May 4-8 where she tackles the women’s singles while Yonex Scottish men’s singles champion Kieran Merrilees will compete in the men’s singles.

In Portugal this week Glasgow’s Linda Sloan will be keen to make up for her early exit in Holland when she and Kirsty Gilmour tackle the women’s singles while Merrilees contests the men’s singles.

Martin Campbell and Angus Gilmour will join Paul Van Rietvelde in the doubles events in Portugal. Van Rietvelde will partner Ben Stawski in the men’s doubles and Alyssa Lim in the mixed.

Elsewhere Kirsty Gilmour justified her seeding by reaching the last sixteen at the European Junior Championships in Finland before losing narrowly to joint fifth seed Natalya Voytsekh of Ukraine 21-16 23-21.

Emma Cook and Caitlin Pringle also reached the last sixteen in the doubles before a 21-16 21-16 defeat by Germany’s joint fifth seeds Isabel Herttrich and Inken Wienefeld.
