First selection made for European Junior Championships
Scotland’s strength in depth at junior level is underlined as the selectors have named a preliminary squad of 12 players for the European Junior Championships to be held in Milan from April 3-12. In March, the final squad will be trimmed to eight.
Edinburgh’s Martin Campbell, the Commonwealth Youth Games bronze medallist and Bank of Scotland National Under 19 singles and doubles champion, heads the list.
Others who seem certain to make the final eight are Campbell’s doubles partner, Angus Gilmour (Troon) and the Longniddry pair of Paul Van Rietvelde and Craig Pollock.
Fraser Michie (Motherwell) and Steven Stewart (Bonhill) complete the list of six boys.
The highly-promising 15-year-old Kirsty Gilmour (Bothwell), who won the Bank of Scotland Under 19 singles and doubles, is among the girls’ nominees along with her on-court partner, Kirsten Geals (Mauchline).
The other four girls in the squad are Kaity Hall (Mauchline), Catriona Lawlor (Cumbernauld), Lisa McMullen (Glasgow) and Gillian Sloan (Glasgow).
The preliminary squad will meet for regular training sessions at the National Badminton Academy at Scotstoun before the number is cut to eight.
