Cooper is a doubles maestro after taking two titles in Cardiff
Edinburgh’s Jillie Cooper claimed her first European circuit victory at last week’s Bank of Scotland International Championships in Glasgow – she has now added another two from the Welsh International in Cardiff.
The 20-year-old Scot repeated her Kelvin Hall success by winning the women’s doubles with England’s Mariana Agathangelou before partnering Renfrew’s Watson Briggs to a more expected victory in the mixed.
Cooper and Agathangelou have leapt 31 places to No.78 in the world this week, and the No. 4 seeds underlined their huge promise with a 17-21 21-19 21-16 win over Dutch pair, Ilse Vaessen and Rachel Van Cutsen, in the final.
In the mixed final, Cooper and Briggs, the title favourites, had a straight games 21-19 21-18 triumph over Vaessen and Jorrit de Ruiter.
Bellshill’s Andy Bowman was another Scottish winner, taking the men’s doubles with local Welsh favourite, Martyn Lewis. Seeded No.3, the pair upset the odds by beating Austria’s No.2 seeds, Jurgen Koch and Peter Zauner, 14-21 21-15 21-13.
In the men’s singles, Glasgow 18-year-old Scot Kieran Merrilees also pulled off a number of shock results – including a win over the French No.2 seed Mathieu Lo Ying Ping - to reach the final. He took a game from top seeded Frenchman, Brice Leverdez, before losing the title decider 15-21 21-18 19-21.
