Campbell crashes out

Edinburgh's Martin Campbell, who had set his sights on a medal, suffered a third round exit in both singles and doubles as the European Junior Championships came to a premature end for the Scots in Milan.

Seeded in the top eight in the singles, the 18-year-old took the first game against England’s Joshua Green, but lost 21-12 18-21 11-21.

In the boys’ doubles, Campbell, a double Bank of Scotland under-19 Champion, suffered an even bigger disappointment alongside Troon’s Angus Gilmour. The No.3 seeds went out 21-17 18-21 14-21 to Belgium’s Fabian Holzer and Max Schwenger.

In the girls’ singles, Bothwell’s 15-year-old Kirsty Gilmour raised hopes of an upset when she claimed the opening game against Belgium’s No. 3 seed, Lianne Tan. But the Bank of Scotland Scottish under-19 Champion couldn’t quite pull off a shock result and went out 21-12 7-21 17-21.

The biggest surprise on a day which finished with all the Scots removed from the draw came in the mixed doubles defeat for No.2 seeds Paul Van Rietvelde (Longniddry) and Gillian Sloan (Glasgow). The Scottish pair lost in three games – 21-16 16-21 18-21 – to England’s unseeded Mark Middleton and Alyssa Lim.
