Busy start to 2009

It’s going to be a hectic start to the New Year for Scotland’s badminton players with the Malaysian Super Series, the Yonex Dunfermline Championships and the Belgian Junior Open all taking place within the next ten days.

Imogen Bankier is seeded No.5 with Edinburgh-born Robert Blair in the mixed doubles in Kuala Lumpur, while the Glasgow 21-year-old will also be forming a new partnership with England’s Donna Kellogg in the women’s doubles. They are unseeded, but have a relatively decent draw.

In Fife, the impressive field includes Bank of Scotland International Champion Liz Cann. The English favourite could face Scotland’s Susan Hughes in what promises to be an intriguing women’s singles event.

Edinburgh’s Jillie Cooper, who has won three European circuit doubles titles in recent weeks, is another of the leading home players taking part.

Meanwhile, a squad of 15 of Scotland’s best youngsters have named for the Belgian Junior tournament, including the Commonwealth Youth Games medallist from Edinburgh, Martin Campbell.
