Injured Bankier to miss world badminton championships
Great Britain have been hit by a double injury blow ahead of next month's badminton World Championships in Hyderabad.
Scot Imogen Bankier has been ruled out after a series of intensive treatments failed to remedy a troublesome six-month knee injury.
And, in a twist of fate, while she was phoning mixed doubles partner Robert Blair to break the news, he was calling her to say he was being forced out by a tendon problem.
Edinburgh-born Blair was also due to compete in the men's doubles with Chris Adcock, where he is ranked 12th in the world.
"The trouble is it's my right knee, my lunging leg," said Bankier.
"We played in Singapore and Indonesia earlier in the summer but the knee wasn't good.
"I have had injections in the knee and shockwave therapy but it hasn't worked so on Thursday I will have injections in the tendon and knee and then I have to rest before commencing rehab."
Her absence in Hyderabad means that Scotland's representation is down to just Glasgow singles players Alistair Casey, ranked world No 65, and world No 28 and Commonwealth silver medallist Susan Egelstaff (formerly Hughes), playing her first big event since her summer wedding.
