Bankier continues rapid rise

Scottish badminton star Imogen Bankier has capped her impressive year with a place in the inaugural World Super Series Masters in Malaysia later this month.

The 21-year-old Glaswegian and mixed doubles’ partner Robert Blair are one of eight pairings to make the grade including world No.4 pairing Anthony Clark and Donna Kellogg.

Bankier and the Edinburgh-born Blair have looked impressive ever since they broke on to the scene with victory at the Bank of Scotland Centenary International last year.

The pairing have also reached the quarter-finals of the All England Championships and last month made it through to last four of the Denmark Open while they have reached the quarter-final stage of tournaments on five other occasions since March.

“It’s fantastic to have the Finals this year and we have a very good spread of countries represented in Kota Kinabalu,” said Badminton World Secretary General Stuart Borrie. “This will be the best of the best and a fitting end to this Olympic year."

Bankier’s impressive form has led to former Olympic silver medallist Gail Emms tipping her to follow in her footsteps and team up with ex-partner Nathan Robertson.
