Susan Egelstaff off to a winner, other Scots not so fortunate
Susan Egelstaff continued her impressive start to the new season when she swept past Austria’s Claudia Mayer in the first round of the Yonex Belgian International in Mechelen.
The 26-year-old Scottish Champion – who got married in May – lived up to her billing as the No. 4 seed as she took just 21 minutes to beat Mayer 21-11 21-8.
But Kieran Merrilees was unlucky to miss out on second round berth when he went out in three games to India’s Kaveh Mehrabi.
The Glasgow youngster took the first game 21-16 but lost the next two, 14-21 18-21 in a close encounter.
Fellow Glasgow ace Linda Sloan was downed by England's Panuga Riou in three ends in yesterday's qualifying session.
In the women's doubles Glasgow's Emma Mason and her English partner Sam Ward face Belgium pair Niki Van Roosbroeck and Ellen Vanthienen in the first round.
A win will give the Anglo-Scottish pair a chance to avenge their Sheffield defeat by reigning Bank of Scotland International women's doubles champion Mariana Agathangelou, who with England team-mate Alyssa Lim, await them in the second round.
In the men's singles, Yonex Welsh Open runner-up Kieran Merrilees of Glasgow plays Iranian Kaveh Mehrabi in his first round match, while Renfrew's Watson Briggs and England's Ben Stawski will face Maurice Niesnar and Till Zander of Germany in the men's doubles.
