Steph Twell more determined than ever ahead of busy 2010
Steph Twell has vowed to let her feet do the talking in 2010 after failing to deliver on her much-talked about potential at this year’s World Championships.
Twell was given a sharp dose of reality at this year’s World Championships failing to make it out of the heats as fellow Brit Lisa Dobriskey claimed silver in the final.
The 20-year-old’s performance in Berlin was in stark contrast to the junior form she has shown over the previous two years scooping European junior 1500m silver in 2007 before upgrading to world gold in 2008.
Twell joined Dobriskey and Charlene Thomas for the 1500m in Berlin in favour of Hannah England after running a personal best of 4:03.48minutes in Monaco – less than two weeks before travelling to the German Capital.
And Twell – who made her Olympic debut last summer, but failed to reach the final – is determined to make a bigger impression on the senior stage next year, with both the Commonwealth Games and European Championships on the calendar.
“The selection issue was hard but I had to put that behind me because if I was still focusing on that then I wouldn’t have been in the right frame of mind,” said Twell - who will compete for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games.
“It was a very tough time and very stressful as well. Everyone wants to make the team and I travelled to Monaco not knowing if I would.
“Hannah was there as well and that made it hard. I just feel for us all because we are all just trying to run as fast as we can and also to the criteria set for us and fortunately I fit that a little bit more.
“For whatever reason I had a bit more weight to my case and that helped but I want to be running quicker times than last year and more importantly, running those times consistently so selection isn’t as much of an issue.”
